About Sir Coxsone Downbeat

Founded in 1954 by Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd (1932-2004), named after cricket player Alec Coxon. One of the 'big three' sounds alongside Duke Reid and King Edwards. Founded Studio One in 1963 - known as 'Jamaica's Motown.' Launched the careers of Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, and The Wailers. Had five systems playing simultaneously on any given night in Kingston. Featured Prince Buster and Lee 'Scratch' Perry as operators. Brentford Road was renamed 'Studio One Boulevard' in his honor.
